Obituary of Antonio Capone

Antonio Capone, a longtime resident Chatham, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, April 10, 2023. He was 93.

He is survived by three daughters, Rosalba Capone, Irene Capone Kohut and her husband Pete & Josie Kriley and her husband Patrick; one son, Anthony Capone and his wife Caroline Barad; two sisters, Lola Alfieri and Carmelina Iandiorio; six cherished grandchildren, Morgan, Rachel, Olivia, Aleks, Peter & Elliott; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Antonio was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mafalda Capone in 2022; his sister, Irene and his brothers, Sabato and Modestino Capone.

Antonio was born in Pratola Serra, Italy, on January 16, 1930, to the late Carmen and Rosalba Capone. He and his mother immigrated to America, where they settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Eventually, Antonio moved back to Italy to marry his beloved wife, Mafalda, and the couple decided to come back to Massachusetts, settling in the North End of Boston to raise their family.

Antonio was a hard worker and a wonderful father. He worked in construction in Boston until 1979 when the economic recession made finding construction work very difficult. He and his family decided to come to New Jersey and Antonio began working as a landscaper for Coviello Bros. in Madison with his nephews and brother-in-law, John. When he wasn’t working Antonio could be found tending his garden day and night, he was a true soul of the earth. He ran his own vegetable stand at the infamous Haymarket Boston. He was also an accomplished winemaker. He was all about good food, bread from Sorrentos and his family made him happy. Antonio was a devout parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Chatham.

A celebration of Antonio’s life will include a visitation held on Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison followed by a 12:00 PM Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 85 Washington Avenue, Chatham.

Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
