Obituary of Roger P. Snyder

Roger P. Snyder, 74, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at home with his family by his side.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Patrica Snyder (née Grace) of Madison; one daughter, Stacey Dooley and her husband Edward of Madison; his two cherished grandchildren, Emma and Shawn Dooley; two brothers, Leroy Snyder and his wife Regina & Peter Snyder and his wife Diane; four nieces and two nephews, his mother-in-law Mary Grace (nee Phillippi) and Roger’s devoted caregiver, Bruce Hylton, who cared for him for the past year and a half of his life. Also, two beloved canines, Sarge & Justin, who were always by his side.

Roger was born in Newark on August 18, 1949 to the late Leroy and Jessie Snyder. He was raised in Chatham with his two brothers and was a graduate of Chatham High School. Roger went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Christian Brother’s University in Memphis, TN where he majored in English.

Roger and Patricia were married in 1973 and settled in Madison where they have lived since. 

Roger had a career for over 40 years as materials manager in the hospital industry before he retired. He was responsible for materials management for several hospitals over the years such as St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City, Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and the Othopedic Institute in New York City . He spent most of his career as materials manager for Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, where he managed the hospital storeroom, dietetics department, central supplies and the mailroom. 

Roger served in the 78th Division of the United States Army Reserve for 31 years, stationed at the Mt. Freedom, NJ base. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major. Roger was a lifelong student of American history, especially the Civil War. Roger was proud of the fact that his great grandfather served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Roger was an active parishioner of St. Vincent Martyr Church. He devoted a great deal of his time as a Eucharistic Minister and on the Buildings & Grounds Committee for many years. Roger was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus #2248 of Madison & Florham Park, where he was a past Grand Knight.

Roger will be deeply missed by his family & friends. His family takes great comfort in knowing he is at peace with the Lord.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation for Roger on Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

Funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2024 followed by Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at 10:45 a.m. at St. Vincent Martyr Church, 26 Green Village Road, Madison. Those unable to attend the mass in-person may attend virtually by visiting www.svmnj.org

Interment with military honors will be held at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison.
