Obituary of Matilda Piccione
Matilda "Dolly" Piccione (Cannava), of Summit, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, September 28, 2024. She was 92.
Matilda was born in Manhattan, NY to Vincent and Matilda Cannava on May 13, 1932, the ninth of ten children. She was part of a large, loving Italian family. In her early years she worked in her mother's pastry shop in Manhattan and then later in Newark when the family relocated there.
When she was 22, Matilda met Ben Piccione, the "love of her life." They married two years later, and she moved to Summit where she lived until shortly before her death. There they raised a family and led a happy life.
Matilda was an amazing cook. She could cook up a feast with only a few hours notice, and oh how she enjoyed it. Nothing made her happier than feeding people. She loved to roller skate as a child and to dance the "Cha Cha" as an adult. She loved to get together with friends for lunch or just to walk the track at Tatlock Field.
Matilda was employed for 25 years by the Summit Board of Education as cashier in the Senior High School cafeteria. Prior to that she was employed by Kent Place School in the cafeteria. Matilda was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, aunt, and friend to many. She had a sharp wit and loved to laugh. Her grandchildren were each her pride and joy. She will be missed by all of us but is now loved eternally in the arms of God and her husband, Ben.
She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Wood (Glenn) of Warren, her son Philip (Angel) of Summit, and her beloved niece Deborah Nappi (Bob) of Boonton. She also leaves her grandchildren Jeremy, Joseph, Bennett (Bethany), Grace, and Maria, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Matilda was predeceased by nine siblings Ana, Rafaella, Filomena, Anthony, Josephine, Sal, Pasquale, Jerry, and
Marie.
Visitation will be held at Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison, NJ from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's-Stony Hill Catholic Church, 225 Mountain Blvd, Watchung.
