Obituary of Jake Locket, III

Jake Locket, III, a beloved lifelong resident of Madison, NJ, peacefully passed away on January 16, 2025.

Jake was born unto the late Jake Alonzo Lockett, Jr. of Oxford, NC and Mildred Elizabeth Burton-Locket of Madison, NJ on Monday, May 19th, 1952. Jake was preceded in death by two siblings, David Locket and Betty Ann Locket-Edwards.

Jake attended the Borough of Madison School System, graduating in 1971. He later enlisted in the United States National Guard. Jake earned the title of high honor sharpshooter while enlisted. He would often say, “I don’t miss.” and “When the smoke clears, I will be the only man standing.”

Jake accepted Christ in his life at an early age and attended Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Madison, NJ.

Jake was affectionately known by family and friends as Al, Burly, Jakie Jakie, and Priest (from the movie Super Fly). Jake was always very curious as to how things work. He would be described as a “tinkerer”,  one that would inspect things, disassemble and reassemble them. A jack of all trades. Jake believed everything had a purpose otherwise it would not be here.

Jake like to go fishing, play the Isley Brothers songs, driving his 1967 Chevy Camaro, riding his bike, and sitting on the porch talking with family and friends. Jake was also known for his catchy phrases like “You know what?.. Look here and let me tell you something.” and his “attention cough” to get your attention. Jake was a big Dallas cowboy fan!!!

Jake met and dated Mary Gordon (Cookie) from this union three sons were born, Michael, Marcus and Morris. Jake didn’t play about his sons and didn’t have a problem letting you know.

Jake leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Michael Gordon of Old Bridge, NJ, Marcus Gordon of East Orange, NJ & Morris Gordon of Springfield, MA; two brothers, Herbert Locket of Madison, NJ & Oxford, NC, Whitman Locket of Madison, NJ; three sisters, Susan Locket of Morristown, NJ, Karen Locket of Madison, NJ & Cherise Locket; two granddaughters, Mariah Gordon & Aleisha Gordon; one great-grandson, Kemari Gordon; three aunts, Dorothy Burton-Lee, Willingboro, NJ, Landora Locket, Oxford, NC, Hattie Locket Blalock, Oxford, North Carolina, Uncle, Fred Lockett, Oxford, North Carolina, Carolina Eric Blacklock, Oxford, NC;  Big Cuz, Charlie Lee, Lil Cuz, Allan Sallie (Mooch), special friends, Brenda Nunez, Timothy Brantley, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
