Senior executive with national advertising agency, won Clio and Cannes awards for creativity, lived in Glen Ridge
Howard Joseph Rieger passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at his home in Florham Park, N.J. He was 84. Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main St., Madison, N.J. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, Convent Station, N.J. Interment will follow at St. Vincent's Cemetery, Madison. Born in Swedesboro, N.J., Howard was a resident of Philadelphia, Pa.; Chicago, Ill., and Glen Ridge, N.J., before moving to Florham Park 15 years ago. Mr. Rieger was a senior vice president and creative director with the NW Ayer advertising company in Manhattan, N.Y., before his retirement. He had been an Eagle Scout as a young man in Swedesboro. He graduated from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Rieger served stateside in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was the recipient of the Clio Award in advertising in 1981. Mr. Rieger received two Cannes Film Festival Awards for his work on the Cadbury Cream Egg commercial. He also designed and presented the Chicago Catholic Interracial Award to Martin Luther King and President Johnson during the civil rights movement. Preceded in death by his wife, Norma (nee Coggins), he is survived by his four children, Michael Edward Rieger, James Martin Rieger, Dawn Patricia Polidoro, and Donna Letitia DiMaggio; a brother, Edward Rieger, and four grandchildren.
