Obituary of Shirley Clement

Shirley Clement (nee Chateauneuf), longtime Madison resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 27, 2018 with her family by her side. She was 86.

Shirley leaves behind her beloved daughters, Nanci Pettitt and her husband Jeff, Janet Hanson and her husband Michael & Carol MacDougall and her husband Alan. She was also blessed with four grandsons, Will Hanson and his wife Jen, Dan Hanson, Scott MacDougall & Steven MacDougall; and one great-granddaughter, Ophelia Mae. In 2012 she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alfred S. Clement.

Shirley was born on March 15, 1931 in Methuen, MA to the late Samuel and Lillian Chateauneuf. After her marriage to the late Alfred S. Clement, she moved to Madison where the two raised their family and lived for over 60 years.

Shirley earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Simmons College in Boston and her master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison. After college she was a social worker for several organizations, then later in her career she became the business administrator for the Madison School District. Shirley eventually went on to become business administrator at the Department of Education of Morris County, then with the State of NJ, before retiring several years ago.

Shirley’s life was devoted to helping others and giving back to the community which she loved. She volunteered her time to the Madison Downtown Development Committee, the Madison Shade Tree Management Board and the Madison High School Scholarship Fund. She was a contributing writer for the Madison Eagle and taught communications & public speaking at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Shirley also taught catechism for many years at St. Thomas More Church.

A Memorial Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at St. Thomas More RC Church, 4 Convent Rd., Morristown, NJ. Interment will be held privately at the request of her family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Madison Memorial Home.
