Obituary of James A. Dirlam

James “Jim” A. Dirlam, a longtime Florham Park resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at his home. He was 83.

Jim was born on August 29, 1935 in Carbondale, PA to the late Wilfred and Mildred Dirlam. He was raised in Carbondale and earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Scranton. Jim served in the US Army and was stationed in Vietnam during the early years of the conflict. After being honorably discharged, Jim accepted a position with the Austin Company and relocated to NJ.

Jim was first introduced to Mary, his future wife, while the two were working at the Austin Company and they were an instant match. After their wedding, the couple lived in Kenilworth for several years prior to settling in Florham Park in 1969, where they raised their family. Jim’s family was paramount in his life and he was a devoted husband, father & grandfather. One of his greatest joys were attending both his children’s, then later, his grandchildren’s sporting events on a regular basis and being present to show his support. Jim also had a quiet yet profound faith in God, which he instilled in his family. 

Jim had a long career with the Sandoz Pharmaceutical Company in East Hanover, prior to retiring 30 years ago. He was a Plant Operations Manager and was extremely dedicated to his work. In his retirement, Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. He would always look forward to family trips to Ocean Isle Beach, NC and dining out with his wife, family and friends. Jim also appreciated music and was a talented singer. He was an active member of the St. Vincent Martyr Church choir.

Jim was active in the Florham Park community. He was an original member of the Florham Park Gazebo Committee as well as a proud member of the Florham Park Senior’s. He also was on the Planning Board for many years.  His good nature, willingness to always help others and strong faith will remain his legacy, and his memory will live on in all those that knew and loved him.

In February, Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary (nee Matalene). He is survived by two sons, James C. Dirlam (Gina) of Bound Brook & John A. Dirlam and his wife, Sheri of Florham Park; one daughter, Dianne M. Dirlam of Madison; three cherished grandchildren, Madison, Michael and Matthew who affectionately called him “Pica”, several cousins and many dear friends.

Funeral services will begin at 9:00AM on Friday, July 19, 2019 at Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison, followed by a 10:00AM Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Vincent Martyr Church, Madison. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a visitation to celebrate Jim’s life on Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 2-4PM & 7-9PM at the funeral home.
