Obituary of John James Mastrobuono

John James Mastrobuono, Jr., a lifelong Madison resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Morristown Medical Center. He was 86. John was born in Morristown on May 1, 1933 to the late John and Carmella Mastrobuono (nee Picone) and was raised in Madison. John was a graduate of Madison High School where he was a talented running back for the football team. After high school he became a semi-pro football player and was drafted by the Philadelphia A’s. Shortly after, John then answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force. During his service he was fortunate to be able to play baseball at Fenway Park in Boston. John was well known in Madison for coaching football and baseball. He was involved in the Madison Softball League, actively playing until age 58. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, John married his beloved wife, Adaria Mastrobuono (nee Facchinei) on June 8, 1957. The couple settled and raised their family in Madison. John was a hard-working, faithful man that loved his family dearly. John had a long career with the Caldwell Department of Public Works as a wastewater treatment administrator. After his retirement he owned & operated Madison Livery, until about 7 years ago. John had a tremendous eye for detail and was an avid collector of baseball cards and coins. He enjoyed trips to Wildwood and Atlantic City with his family every summer. John cherished the time spent he with his grandchildren, and frequently attended their sporting events. His grandchildren will fondly remember him taking them to Toys R Us often- so much so that they renamed it “Toys R Me”. In addition to his parents, John was pre-deceased by his 2 brothers, Neil & James Mastrobuono, and his 2 sisters, Celestina LoSapio & Rose Ganning. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Adaria Mastrobuono; his 2 sons, John Mastrobuono of Madison & Neil Mastrobuono and his wife, Lauren of Cedar Knolls; his daughter, Carmella Doherty and her husband, Joseph of Morris Plains; his nine cherished grandchildren, Johnny, Emily, Diana, Neil, Matthew, Christina, Adaria, Ashlyn, and Joseph; many adoring nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a visitation to celebrate John’s life on Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 1:00PM to 5:00PM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison. Funeral services will begin on Monday at 9:00AM at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00AM Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Vincent Martyr RC Church, Madison. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Madison. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable contribution in John’s memory to Alzheimer’s New Jersey, 425 Eagle Rock Avenue, Ste. 203, Roseland, NJ 07068 or at alznj.org
