Obituary of Cmdr. Bobby Stultz, USN

Commander Bobby E. Stultz, USN (Ret.), a longtime Madison resident, died peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2020 after a long illness.  He was 91.

Bobby was born on January 1, 1929 in Bristol, VA to the late William and Loretta Stultz.  Bobby was raised in Virginia, where he attended Virginia Tech, earning a degree in civil engineering.  After graduating in 1951, Bobby attended Navy OCS at Newport, RI and was commissioned as an Ensign, Civil Engineer Corps.  Bobby was later augmented into the United States Navy, serving over 21 years, retiring with the rank of Commander in 1974. 

During his military career, Bobby served in Argentina, Newfoundland, Port Hueneme, CA, Norfolk, VA, Honolulu, HI, New Orleans, LA and Gulfport, MS.  He commanded United States Naval Construction Battalion 121 (Seabees).  They served two tours in Vietnam, TET Offensive, Phu Bai, South Korea, USMC Headquarters and NAVFACENGCOM, Arlington, VA and at the Navy Oceanographics, Alexander, VA.  Bobby’s many awards include a silver star and three bronze stars with Combat V, Vietnam Unit Gallantry Citation, Navy Commendation Medal, as well as a Presidential Unit Citation.

While in the service, Bobby caught the eye of Gibbs & Hill, Inc. (later Hill International), a large engineering firm.  He accepted a position as a civil engineer, working on many critical infrastructure and construction projects in New York City, from 1974 to 1994.

During his retirement, Bobby cherished time spent with his wife and family.  He was also a parishioner of St. Vincent Martyr Church in Madison.

Bobby was a wonderful man, who was loved by all.  He will be deeply missed.Bobby is survived by his loving wife, Frances (nee Doherty), his brothers, Jack and Jerry Stultz, sister, Ginger Boevink, son, Jon Stultz and his wife, Janet, daughter, Jana Magnusson and her husband, John and their children, Heidi and Laura, daughter, Lauri Richmond and her husband, Dennis, daughter, Debbi Hinrichsen and her husband, Kevin and their children, Rachel, Isaiah, Josiah, Rebekah, Elijah and a great-grandson, Joshua.

Due to the coronavirus state restrictions, funeral services will be private.
