Eleanor “Peachie” Attonito posted a condolence
Sunday, August 16, 2020
I am very saddened to learn today 8/16/2020 of Richard Holden’s passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Rich after I was elected to the Madison Borough Council seat in 2000 after reluctantly being recruited to do so by his wife MaryAnna Holden. To be honest I had no idea of his accomplishments written here in his obituary, as most of our interactions were during local social events and especially dining with other Madisonians at the Captain’s Galley Restaurant on Main Street. Rich was quite a truth speaker and low key comedian with his sharing of his views of local politics an politicians with me. I found him to be a refreshing enlightened soul. I extend my sympathies to all who knew Richard and especially to his wife MaryAnna. What a great individual he will be remembered as in the short time I knew him.
Sincerely, Eleanor “Peachie” Attonito
Madison resident 1976-2004
Councilwoman 2000-2002.

I read about Richard's death in the Star Ledger. I am so sorry for your loss. Death of a loved one can be very distressing even if the person is elderly or sick. I would like to share the Bible's hope for those who have died and an encouragement for those who have lost a loved one. The Bible teaches us that death was not part of God's original plan. He wanted man to live forever on a paradise earth. Man disobeyed God and brought about sin and death to the human race. God's plan will still be realized. Isaiah 55:11 states, "So my word that goes out of my mouth will be. It will not return to me without results, but it will certainly accomplish whatever is my delight. It will have sure success in what I send it to do." The Bible talks about a resurrection of those who have died. (Acts 24:15, John 5:28, 29) The word resurrection in the Bible literally means "a standing up again" and "revival of the dead". The provision for resurrection of the dead is a magnificent expression of God's undeserved kindness. It displays his wisdom and power and is a means by which his original purpose regarding the earth and mankind will be carried out. If you would like to know more about what the Bible teaches, please visit JW.org. Sincerely, Paula

Mary-Anna,
Sympathy to you on the loss of your husband Richard. I remember your stories of your fun traveling with Rich to visit the other cities and towns of Madison in the USA while you served as Mayor of Madison, NJ. I also enjoyed reading many of Rich’s columns entitled “Fifty Year Ago” in the Madison Eagle while researching for the Madison Historical Society. Later I learned that Rich had served as President of the Society. Little did I know of all his other illustrious skills as a journalist, but it is no surprise. May you find comfort in knowing that others care.

Mary-Anna, we've never met but I was a friend of Rich's from graduate school. Today I came across an old address book squirreled away in a long-forgotten drawer. I glanced through and saw Rich's name. It had his Staten Island address. I had crossed it out to update it with Hong Kong. I decided to find him. Sadly, I was too late.
I visited Rich once when he was at the WSJ. I was working for Knight Newspapers in Philadelphia in the early to mid-70s, so it was probably then. He and I had a great lunch. Can't remember the name of the place, but they served up big sandwiches and cold midday martinis.
I just wanted to give you my condolences. Rich was a good guy.

Dear Mary-Anna, I was surprised to see the obit for Richard in the Ledger on Sunday. I enjoyed reading about his career. his love of journalism and his public service. I used to see him at the Am. Legion and of course, over the years at political functions. Please accept my sincerest sympathies.

Mayor Holden
I met Rich during my tenure at Dow Jones. I was new to Madison and DJ in 2000. I wanted to understand more about the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund as I made way around the campus in Princeton.
Then I saw the license plate, in downtown Madison of all places.
That was the start of a casual relationship with my neighbor and Co-DJer.
We will all miss him and his smile/wit.
I will miss running into him around the town. It was an honor for me to be seen with him.

Mary-Anna -- As you know, Rich was an outstanding man. Talented as a journalism leader with Dow Jones -- one of the 'Magnificent Seven' (as he once told me) founders of the Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong; in New York with the main product as a helluva copyeditor for decades and ending his career as a leader advocate of and developing minority journalists sponsored by 'Mr. Dow and Mr. Jones' -- and a strong friend of Mari and me from our Missouri School of Journalism days from 1969 on.
We enjoyed hosting him and you 'the Mayor' at our homes in Tennessee,Ohio and New Mexico. While his health diminished in the past few years, he always had an attitude of 'let's get together soon'. When that was tough to pull off we'd chat about our kids, issues of the day and Missouri (and Army) football. Will miss, Rich. Keep your virtual coaching skills sharp from above and one of these days the Tigers will maybe meet West Point for the national championship! Talk about conflict within! I can just envision you spending one half on each team's side.
Until then, Bully for Old Mizzou, my friend. Rollie Wussow
