I only just found out about Jim's passing today when my husband and I were talking about him and I searched his name. My deepest condolences to the family. I met Jim when I was little - he sang with and was good friends with my mother, Elaine Baver, who was the organist for many years at Christ the King Church in New Vernon. We kept in touch over the years after my mother passed away in 1999 and I worked with him one summer with planning and organizing his trips around Bergen County to photograph historic homes for which he published a book. Jim was so funny and such a wonderful friend to my mother and to me and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

I just found out of his passing due to the scholarship that CCM offered, and was greatly saddened to know that he was no longer with us. I had him as a professor in a photography course, in which his passion and expertise were readily available to be shared. His enthusiasm for photography was unrivaled, and he taught me a lot.
Wherever he is, I hope he is doing well, and my thoughts are with his family.

My deepest condolences. I only just found out having read the Morris County post about the two memorial scholarships awarded recently by County College of Morris. What a beautiful & generous tribute by David Scinto. I was not a close friend and have not seen Jim in many years, but I have read several of his books and have enjoyed his photography. He is directly responsible for my receiving a Certificate in Historic Preservation from Drew back in 2010. I knew about the program for many years but never would have started had it not been for one of Jim's photography class offerings. Two Saturdays seemed do-able; not a daunting commitment. They were great day long workshops. Partially indoors and then exploring the historic sites nearby. Great people. I was hooked. His class made me realize that Madison wasn't THAT far and slowly I was able to accumulate the credits. So many experiences, friendships and life work has come from meeting him and taking his course.
We are all richer for knowing him and poorer for his passing.

I had known Jim for many years as he had presented a variety programs for the Library of the Chathams . While we are going through the COVID shutdown of the library he gave us several virtual programs that were outstanding.
I will greatly miss Jim's joyful presence and wonderful sense of humor. The world is a much sadder place without him..

I was shocked to read of Jim's passing. I worked with Jim many years ago when he worked at United Way's First Call For Help and again when he came back to volunteer for us. His wit and humor always kept us laughing. I remember he helped us video tape a training for our volunteers and there was so much laughter involved I was surprised it ever got done! I remember him as such a funny and kind hearted soul. One year he gave several of us at United Way copies of a beautiful photo he took of a winter scene as a holiday gift. The framed photo is still hanging in my house today. My deepest sympathy to his family. Rest In Peace Jim! From Kathy Sobotor Kwasnik and your United Way family.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved Jim. I am an adjunct faculty member at CCM and was an Academic Strategies tutor when Jim also served as a tutor for the students of Accessibility Services. I often saw him sitting with a student, one-on-one, engaged and listening. We would often exchange pleasantries and share ideas.
It was clear Jim loved working with students and was committed to their success.

I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I had him come present one of his terrific history programs at my library last year and he also displayed some of his photography here. I know our patrons and staff enjoyed seeing his work for the two months it was on display. God I can’t believe Jim is gone. Twenty-six years ago, I decided to take a photography class at County College of Morris. I was at a crossroads in my life, and had no idea what I was going to do. The photo class was just supposed to be for fun, but Jim convinced me to consider photography as a career. Twenty-six years later and I’m still at it. It is hard to put into words how Jim's passing has affected all of us who got to know him! I have hired Jim to present at two library systems, the last being Sussex County. No matter where, Jim quickly developed a following, after just one lecture! We spoke often, joked recently about how we are surviving Covid, and how we looked forward to life returning to "normal"- sadly Jim will miss it. Thankfully I recorded his last two lectures for us and in one he told the registrants I was his number #1 Fan Girl; he was right. We are all missing him and hope his family finds peace in his passing and his memory be for a blessing.

I was so sorry to read of Jim's passing.
I knew Jim in his professional capacity and attend numerous lectures on all different topics. Whenever I saw that he was speaking, it was a must to go. His photos that accompanied those lectures were wonderful and he was always so eloquent and knowledgeable.
Accessible and always taking the time to answer questions and chat. At the Chatham Senior Center after this one lecture he had any number of his photos for sale as a fund raiser for the Center. I was thrilled to get a lovely scene that sits in my living room for all to see. He graciously signed it for me.
I will treasure it and the memory of a fine man.
My condolences to his family and to all who loved him.
May he rest in peace.

Jim and I were both in the class of 1976 though at different high schools. We met during the summer of either 74 or 75 doing the play "Showboat" with the Madison Recreation Department and John Bunnell. It was easy to become friends with Jimmy. We both continued to participate in the summer musicals through our college years.
After graduating college John came and found us both and "told" us that we would be singing in the Orpheus Club *LOL*. We sang together for John for about 10 years. I had moved into NYC by that time and the commute out to rehearsals got a little difficult after a number of years.
Jim and I exchanged Christmas cards and I always looked forward to his photography on his cards. I wish that we had managed to stay closer, he was a good friend.

I was introduced to Jim in 2013 by friends. I had recently retired from the Madison Public Library and Jim was looking to hire a part time person to work on the lecture business he was building. Honestly, I did not feel ready to make a new work commitment. Then I met Jim and within 5 minutes I knew that if he wanted to hire me, I was more than willing! His goal was to have fun while working and we always did.
Within weeks I thought, Jim needs a salesperson which I am not. For his benefit I should resign. However, I quickly realized that Jim did NOT need a salesperson. The clients and the audiences loved him! Not only did Jim provide lectures that were entertaining and informative he was super easy to work with. He always put the client first. One time he drove over 50 miles one way to a library. For the first and only time no one attended. He loved public libraries so much that he politely turned down his honorarium.
Jim also put family and friends first.. I was always blocking off dates on his calendar that involved making time to help people or to do an airport run.
From May of 2013 to February 2020 Jim presented over 700 live lectures. When the pandemic hit he quickly pivoted and from April - September he had presented over 70 virtual lectures. He had repeat attendees at every single presentation because now the location did not matter.
My last conversation with Jim was about how excited he was that a client was going to allow a socially distanced in person lecture. As successful as he had made the virtual business he truly missed live audiences! Jim was a people person who instantly made everyone feel comfortable. Many clients considered him a friend.
We both (along with my husband Don) shared a love of history. I would read an article and think Jim will like this and text him a link. Every day since his passing I have thought about sending him a text and I keep waiting for a call from him.
As my husband said, "Jim was the best." We will both truly miss him!

Jim was a self-made man who remade himself several times. After a brief flirtation with the corporate world—at Prudential, I think—he became the photographer than many of us remember him as. But when digital cameras and post-production trickery took over, he made a graceful exit. Enter Jim DelGiudice, Historian. By the time the current health crisis hit, Jim had built a one-man show (lecturing on a variety of historical topics) that included hundreds of “performances” each year. Remaking himself in light of the Pandemic required confronting his Bête Noir, technology. But confront it he did! Jim and I had a few “fake” Zoom sessions in order to try out features. His favorite was “mute all participants.” And so the phoenix rose from the flames. Jim’s bookings quickly recovered and included virtual lectures places such as Boston, MA and Sarasota, FL. My 90-year-old mother managed to log into one of his recent talks and gave it a glowing review—to which Jim replied, “If only she were a mere 60 years younger.”
Jim was enjoying his success with the humility and understatement with which he lived the rest of his life, as reflected in this recent—and ironic—text exchange:
8/23/20, 1:39 PM
Jim: I've been dealing a lot in cash lately. Because my financial picture is very slightly less dire than usual, paying in cash makes me feel less dependent than with plastic. This of course is magical thinking - there's no real correlation. But there's something nice about throwing two 20s on the table after a restaurant dinner.
Anyway, it feels like I'm taking a baby step off the grid, and it's very satisfying, logical or not.
Me: Yes. Magical thinking is good!!
Jim: I told you I outlived my father the other day. Absolutely no correlation in our lives or lifestyles. Nevertheless I stood vigil the whole night, worrying that if I fell asleep I would croak. Total Magic!
Me: We might all do better to think of ourselves as living on borrowed time. I mean that seriously--not a grim thought to me.
Jim: They say to live every day as if it were your last. The problem with that was when I tried it last week I got very anxious. The saying should be, live every day as if it were your SECOND to last, your penultimate.
Me: Yes.
Jim: The 3rd to last, BTW, is called the antepenultimate if memory serves.
_______________________________________________________________________
Let’s all honor Jim’s wisdom, generosity—and vocabulary—by living every day as if it were our “antepenultimate”!

I will always remember the presentations he did with Stu Lasser and his quick wit and remarkable knowledge of all things Morris County. A number of years ago, Jim photographed my parents and I at an awards luncheon and it’s a cherished photo. It’s even more special now knowing that Jim has left us all much too soon. Soon after 911, Jim and I did a little project for Morris Chamber of Commerce's 'Leadership Morris' program, dubbed Jim & Stu's Excellent Adventure, We covered a dozen or so sites, the most interesting of which was the Jersey City Reservoir where we got picked-up by the police for trespassing. Jim and I had a good laugh on that one. Here's the cover and first page of our in-county trip. Jim had simply the most endearing personalty and fantastic sense of humor.
