Dear Helen, Michael, and Luke,
Melina and I are deeply saddened to learn of your loss. I was so fortunate and privileged to have known Mike for over 45 years. Simply put, Mike was special. He was present when I started my career at Mellon and guided me during the early years. His visionary leadership, commitment to excellence, compassion, generosity of spirit, and dedication to family shaped the lives of all those around him. He was a role model for us all. In the years since Mike departed Mellon, I was proud to call him “friend”. I will forever be grateful for everything he did for me. We will miss Mike and all those qualities that made him so special. Mike leaves us with fond memories and unforgettable life lessons. Our deepest condolences to your entire family. May you be comforted by the love you all shared. Rest In Peace, Mike.

I played American Legion Baseball with Mike from 1962-1964 (Dalton American Legion team). When Mike was graduating from college and preparing to enter the military, I was just wrapping up my enlistment and getting ready to enter UMass-Amherst under the G.I.Bill. Rest in Peace, Mike.....there's baseball in Heaven!
In Sympathy,

I had the pleasure of a few grade school outings with Michael as Kyle and Luke went on various field trips. Later I enjoyed talking him into leading a capital campaign with Helen for the Madison Y as well as the occasional interactions when we found ourselves in the same place. I always enjoyed his lovely teasing spirt.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Helen, Luke, and Michael.

Mike was always a positive and upbeat person with whom I had little contact after the Y years, but always enjoyed our random encounters around Madison. He was one of the people who gave of themselves and helped make Madison a great town for families, through the Y, Helen, I send you sympathy and a hug, on the loss of a fine man.

Michael was a brilliant, compassionate and visionary leader in his many corporate roles and in his community volunteerism, especially at the Madison Area YMCA. We knew Michael best as our YMCA Board chair from 2015-2018 as he worked tirelessly to challenge and support the Board and top management. Michael was Board chair when we launched our capital campaign in 2016, partnering with me in dozens of in-person meetings with Board members and dozens of other community partners. Under his leadership, our YMCA achieved historic successes in philanthropy, opening the way for our long-planned $19M Family Center expansion, which is being completed this fall. We could not have accomplished this major achievement without Michael’s inspiring and continued leadership over the last six years, both in front of the Board and behind the scenes. He was an expert coach and counselor, always supporting us to more fully and effectively serve the Madison community and plan for the future. Over the last three years, Michael continued to engage key partners, helping us ultimately to raise more than $10M to fund the Y’s much needed expansion. Michael’s legacy through our expanded Family Center, which he and Helen were so central to making possible, will endure for many decades to come. I am deeply saddened by Michael’s passing, and honored to have had the opportunity to know and work with him. I send heartfelt condolences to Helen and the Caulfield family at this time of great loss.
Sincerely,
Diane Mann

I was Mike's right hand (should I say left hand, since he was left handed) man at Colby. Grace made me promise to not let Mike fight with his glasses on. So, I was there to grab the glasses from him as the fisticuffs began. I never let Grace down. Rest in Peace my friend. St. Patty's day won't be the same without you.

Joan and I were so saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. There were few people that had a greater impact on my career than Mike. Helen our deepest sympathies to you and your family in the loss of your dear husband Michael. Michael a dear friend of the Carmine Toto Jr. family,. Mike is another big loss to the Madison community. Michael always took time to talk to us while he was on his daily walks past our house. Mike was always a quiet leader who supported the YMCA in all ways. He even played a little bocce in the YMCA Tournament. He was never on the winning team but his leadership, as in his life, was outstanding. He quietly said to his teammates just play the best game you can. As in his life he gave an example of being the best version of yourself in all the challenges you face in life. Michael , Rest In Peace.
