We first met Martha about 20 years ago, shortly after we became neighbours, just a couple of doors apart, in Greyfriars Garden, St Andrews. Since then, we looked forward to seeing her with Michael on their visits here, several times a year. It was a joy to see her, soon after they'd arrived, on our street with a full supermarket trolley to stock up for their stay. Every encounter with the smiling, warm-hearted Martha was a delight. For the time of their stay, she and Michael ceased to be "visitors", would take a deep-seated interest in local matters - at the same time providing us with a window into life in the USA, especially its politics! Each visit to their flat would remind us of two of her many gifts: the paintings on the wall demonstrated her talent as an artist; the snacks she provided with pre-dinner drinks her skill in the kitchen. We'll miss her very much but our happy memories will remain.
