A real North St guy! Always a smile and a good word whenever I saw him. As a boy, I spent many hours on his front porch on North St with his nephews, Lou & Lucy Romano, John & Gene Piana when Sonny would join us and tell us stories of North St legends. Years later, when I would see him, he would always reminisce about those old days and how much he loved my grand-fathers home made Lemon Ice that he would walk across the street to buy and sit on the front steps of our store eating it and talking sports, even just a few years ago he bumped into me and the first thing he said, "Joey, remember your Lemon Ice? Man, I miss that Lemon Ice"!
I believe he got his other nick-name, "Rabbit" from my Dad because he could run like one as a kid. A good guy. Rest in peace old friend.

Carmine your passing has made these last few days incredibly sad, but then as we write the words, and take time to reflect, we think about how great you were and how you were loved so much.
We loved our family visits with you and Barbara. You always made us feel at home and we loved spending time sitting together and hearing about all the great stories and life experiences. You knew us all too well and of course won our hearts and stomachs.
We learned how hard working you were, how incredibly talented you were as a musician, your love for travelling, sports and the love you have for your family.
Typical of who you where, it was always about spending time with family regardless of the situation.
Carmine we could sit and write forever, so many great memories but as we share them it’s just a reminder of what a loving and respectful family man you were. You worked hard and tirelessly so your family could move forward, and its amazing to see how the family has flourished and grown, what a wonderful job, you and Barbara have done. This reflection has taught us that maybe we should all take a chapter from your life book Carmine.
Carmine this not goodbye. We know you’ve certainly earned those wings. Yes, its our loss but Heaven’s gain. We know you will look out for all of us, love you.
John, Lina, Selina and Lisa Marie Tontodonati

Barb and family, I am so truly sad to hear of Sonny’s passing. You and Sonny were my first friends in my new neighborhood and you both welcomed me and Josie warmly. I enjoyed our conversations and always left feeling happy after I talked to you. Our time as neighbors was much to short but I am grateful for the time we had. Sending much love at this difficult time, Missy (and Josie Hope too)

I knew Sonny for many years. We played softball many a night, up the street from Sonny’s house, at the Madison Junior School field. He was a great player, and even more so, great friend. He always had a smile on his face, and i think we laughed and joked around, as much as we played ball! Sonny was my friend, and although i didn’t see him in later years, i will always consider him as my friend. Gonna miss you Sonny. Heaven got a great player for their softball team.

Seeing this obituary, my heart is very sad. Growing up as a little girl on North Street, I heard many stories of the families that lived there. My dad was famous for giving "nicknames" to most of the good neighbors we knew. Carmine "Rabbit" was no exception! My dad always spoke highly of this young guy & in turn Rabbit as we knew him, always enjoyed my dad as well. Even as a child, this kind man ALWAYS had a smile & kind word whenever I passed the old homestead on North Street. It was years later, seeing him at a town gathering, I asked...Rabbit, what is your real name? It was then that I learned the true man behind the warm, smiling face!
A kinder guy you will never meet...I am sure my dad ( Riggen) and many other North Street cronies, will welcome this young guy they all loved many years before!

I've known Uncle Sonny since I was 5 years old........66 years ago! He was instrumental in me truly getting interested in music. When I was about 8, my sister and I spent the weekend at Uncle Sonny and Aunt Barbara's house in Madison, NJ. I went into their basement and saw his band's instruments all set up and I just had to get on the drums..............and from then on I was hooked. And he was one of the influences I had in becoming a professional musician for many years. When I was about 13, his band was in need of a drummer for a gig. He told his band members, "hey, my nephew plays the drums....let's give him a try". Well, I was not what they were expecting but I was able to keep up enough to play a gig with them. Uncle Sonny told me to "hold your drums up when you go in so they won't see how young you are and if anyone asks, tell them you're in the local union out of Parsippany.". We often chatted on the phone and shared "professional musician war stories"..........things that only other musicians would really understand. I have lived in California for many years but one of the highlights when I attended my sister's wedding in 2019 was being able to spend some time with him. His passing has affected me more than I thought it would and it has brought back all those memories. I hope you are now at rest with all those who have passed before. RIP and take care, dear Uncle. Looking forward to seeing and playing with you again someday.

So many memories of Uncle Sonny…
I always got a kick listening to Uncle Sonny recite one of his funny stories. Or when he demonstrated for me his animal repellent around his vegetable garden - he hooked up a car battery, and when some little critter approached his veggies…they got a ZAP!
I enjoyed chatting about music with him, and had the opportunity to jam with him a few times. He was always willing to help when needed. I am forever grateful for him back feeding my portable generator during Superstorm Sandy so that I would have heat.
Rest in peace, Uncle Sonny. You will be missed.
