Obituary of Mafalda Capone

Mafalda Capone, of Chatham, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, January 27, 2022. She was 89.

Mafalda’s commitment to her family, friends and her faith was unending. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Antonio Capone; three daughters, Rosalba Capone, Irene Capone Kohut and her husband Pete & Josie Kriley and her husband Patrick; one son, Anthony Capone and his wife Caroline Barad; one brother, Giovanni “John” Iandiorio; six cherished grandchildren, Morgan, Rachel, Olivia, Aleks, Peter & Elliott; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by six of her siblings.

Mafalda was born in Monocalzati, Italy on August 25, 1932 to the late Sabino and Guiseppina Iandiorio, and was one of eight brothers and sisters. As a young girl Mafalda learned the art of needlepoint and embroidery from old world masters in Italy. She went on to become an incredible seamstress and tailor. Mafalda enjoyed the art for the rest of her life.

Mafalda emigrated to the United States with her beloved husband, Antonio Capone first settling in the Boston, MA area with their young family. Later in life Mafalda and Antonio moved to Chatham, NJ.

Mafalda’s life revolved around her family and her greatest joy and love was her grandchildren. She was a proud Nonna to her six grandchildren and they have wonderful memories to cherish of her. Mafalda started a yearly tradition planting potatoes and string beans in the family garden, which she would then harvest each year with her grandchildren. Mafalda’s true passion was cooking homemade meals for her family and loved ones. This included the traditional Sunday “Pasta Day”, where all the children and grandchildren gathered. Everyone always looked forward to her incredible Italian cooking.

Mafalda enjoyed family vacations to the Jersey shore and she treasured the simpler things in life. Through her children, grandchildren and her large extended family that she loved so deeply, along with those who cared for her so lovingly, she will be honored and missed.

A celebration of Mafalda’s life will include a visitation held on Sunday, January 30, 2022 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main Street, Madison.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend funeral services which will begin on Monday at 9:00AM at the funeral home followed by a 10:00AM Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 85 Washington Avenue, Chatham.

Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
