I was sad to learn of Sarah's passing today - April 1 - when the 2021 holiday letter I had mailed to her was returned. I knew her - and Chappie - from old days singing in Masterwork Chorus together and then later, sometimes seeing her at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship. I used to visit her once in a while when she still lived in her house in Madison, and occasionally we'd go out to lunch. I'd only had contact with her by mail in recent years, but remember her as a dear, charming friend, a role model for those of us closer to her children's ages on how to age with grace.

I met Sarah about 8 years ago when I received the Robert Chapman poetry prize at Drew University. During dinner she leaned over and asked me about my poetry. « Well is it any good? Because if it’s not good I won’t lie to you. » And that was that. We stayed in touch, meeting for tea and sharing poetry. To say I’m heartbroken would be an understatement but I hope to live a life filled with purpose like Sarah did. I love you and miss you forever. What an honor to call you a friend. -Bella

Sarah Chapman always had a warm and gracious curiosity about people she met, and a welcoming manner. She and "Chappie" were a very connected couple, on each other's wavelength. He once described a encounter with a relative of his who made the gross error of expressing anti-Semitic sentiments before him and Sarah. That relative was summarily "dealt with."

Posted by D Chapman on behalf of my old and dear friend Greg Gallina.
I met Mrs. Chapman in 1960 when she and her family moved to Baldwin Long Island and her son Douglass and I became friends as we remain today. She was a warm, smart, caring mom who took a genuine interest in the gaggle of early teenage boys who hung around her house playing ball and devising various schemes. The Chapman house was of a much more intellectual bent than I was accustomed to and I learned a lot there about politics, current events and ethics. A real plus was that they had a subscription to "The New Yorker ''. I looked forward to each issue for the cartoons. As the years went by, whenever I would see Mrs. Chapman she would greet me with a great big smile, ask about what was going on in my life at that point in time and listen intently.May she rest. Greg Gallina

Sarah left us on a very special day - Valentine's Day, almost Snow Moon Day, and our Scrabble Day! She will be missed in all aspects of our lives and will forever live in our hearts and soul. Her smile and the twinkle in her eyes are sealed in our memories. Being an Educator, I am proud to note that I learnt valuable life, academic, and civic lessons from Sarah, which I could have never obtained through any books! She is busy making new friends wherever she is - we wish her the best in her new world. Her lovely family are in our thoughts and prayers. May her soul rest in peace. Om Shanti!
