This morning, I searched for Gerry's contact information to give to a friend with issues I thought Gerry might be able to help him with. I was shocked when I saw his obituary! Gerry and I both attended New Jersey Medical school, and I knew him from the years I did my residency at Morristown Medical Center (then, Morristown Memorial Hospital). As we all know, Gerry was an amazing individual, both professionally and personally. He will be sorely missed, and my belated thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I was a medical school classmate of Gerry, at UMDNJ- NJ medical school, and I am very sorry to hear about his passing. I remember Gerry to be an exceptionally smart and very kind person. He was always willing to help a fellow classmate who was struggling with anything. He was a very social person, always participating in the fun outings and events that made the rigors of medical school bearable. I havent seen him in many years, as often happens with schoolmates as life takes its course. But his vast accomplishments do not surprise me in the least. It is very sad that he was taken away from his family and friends at such a young age. I, for one, am grateful for having known him and for spending an important time period of my life in his company. Rest in peace, Gerry.

I just attended the International Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine meeting last week and was shocked to hear the news. So many of us rehab doctors around the country and indeed around the world knew Jerry as a very top expert in musculoskeletal medicine. But those of us who knew him, met with him every year, worked on papers, worked on lectures, etc. with him knew the most important part. He was the truly nicest, kindest person. Life in our specialty won't be the same without my friend.

The pain of arthritis spinal degeneration from Lupus had taken its toll on my mobility. I lived with chronic pain. After decades of chronic debilitating pain and physical therapy- I met Dr. Malanga. April 2010 forward his treatment began the massive improvement for the pain and mobility issues. I am devastated to hear about his death. May the Lord bless his family. Dear Carrie, John, Luke, Tara, Grace, Rose and Augustin -
My deepest condolences for your loss which more than you may know share with you. I am a physiatrist practicing in Charlotte North Carolina and had the distinct honor and privilege of serving on the Board and several PASSOR committees with Gerry. We shared many meals and beers after meetings, conferences and lectures. His love of family and pride in all of his children was always readily evident. Gerry & Scott Nadler were the two physiatrists I looked forward to seeing and spending time with. Gerry and I saw eye to eye on physiatry issues and life in general. There is no one in our specialty I respected or trusted more. His integrity and professionalism are unmatched and I will miss him greatly.

I had the privilege to write a foreword for one of his classic texts that has no peer, Musculoskeletal Physical Examination. I’ve had the pleasure of Gerry’s care and friendship as a patient and later a collaborator for 12 years. His specialness as a doctor was only exceeded by his extraordinariness as a human being. I am absolutely stunned and crushed by this news and our collective loss. Gerry and I had over the years long conversations about medical care, the state of the healthcare industry and what to do about it and family. Gerry was one who is ability to help others was only limited by the number of hours in a day. I got to meet and work briefly with his son Luke and I know that his legacy will carry on through his wonderful family. My heart aches though for his family and the pain from having someone so wonderful taken from us so prematurely. You will live in the hearts of so many that you have touched during your life. Dr Malanga was a dear friend and a mentor to my husband and I. He was there for me when my father passed and always found the time to check in. My 8yr old daughter even has a teddy bear named Gerry Malanga because she would listen in on our frequent calls and hear his name and the positivity that emanated from this great man. When we last spoke, he told me he felt lucky and loved, despite the circumstances.
He was always so supportive of our efforts and a stalwart defender of legitimate Orthobiologics; he always did the right thing and was a fierce advocate for good science and Medicine.
Above all, Dr Malanga loved his family and my heart goes out to them through these very difficult times. He was so very proud of his son Luke and the strides DataBiologics has made over the years with his partners Dr Bowen and Dr Rogers.
May his important legacy live on in the work we continue to do and lest we forget the high bar he set for us all.
Rest in Peace Gerry.

Thank you for being my travel companion Gerry, I looked up to you very much. You were an amazing role model to me. Our motto for the trip, although I did get it then, was "I'm not much for haggling" ripped form Peanuts comics while we were on a train from toledo to Barcelona. My deepest condolences to Carrie, Anthony, Rita, Tara, Luke, Grace and John. Gerry deeply loved his family. Gerry and I were neighbors, childhood and live time friends of 57+ years. Growing up I viewed Gerry as my little brother. We spent hours playing basketball, football and waffle ball. I cherished the time, in recent years, we spent on LBI. A great: husband, father, son, brother, doctor, friend, teacher and athlete. A person of great faith, deep intellectual, an Eagle Scout and a good sense of humor. I was so proud of his many accomplishments. I met Mary, my wife at one of his holiday parties. You are loved and will be greatly missed. You made the world a brighter and better place. May you Rest In Peace.

Spending time with Dr. Malanga as a college student not only confirmed my desire to go into medicine but also inspired me to become a physiatrist. His altruism combined with his hunger for learning made him a pioneer that we will never forget. Like many others, he was a father figure to me in my career and I can truly say that he changed my life. Sincere condolences to the family and friends.

I’m so sorry about your loss. He contributed so much to medicine and to those who studied under him. He left a great legacy despite his abruptly shortened life.

Gerry was a mentor, colleague, and friend. Despite his incredible reputation, he always treated his mentees as colleagues and with mutual respect. His influence in my career cannot be described but his footprint goes beyond that. He was a physician I will always try to emulate. One of the best things he taught me: “Chris, give them a memorable experience when they come see you no matter how you help them. This could be with medication, advice, or just listening. That’s how you become the best physician."

You will be deeply missed, and always remembered.

He treated me like family, cured my chronic elbow pain, invited me to the local church for basketball, gave me professional and personal mentorship… hours that his family was so generous to give. He walked with giants nor lost the common touch. I miss you Gerry.

Arnold Caplan: Gerry and I were great friends. I was there in spirit for his original surgery and now for this latest episode. He will be remembered for his kindness and thoughtful treatment of both patients and colleagues; all of us treated with the upmost respect and good humor. His passing is a blow to the regenerative medicine industry and to all of his colleagues and friends. My very sincere best wishes to the family and understand that our hearts are breaking and that we are holding hands with you at this difficult moment.

I am so very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Malanga. I had the pleasure of meeting him several years ago when he healed my shoulder through PRP! He was so kind, and so intelligent. I consider him a trailblazer in the field of regenerative medicine! I know how passionate he was about his work and from the obituary, it’s sounds like he was an incredible husband, father and friend. I am deeply saddened by this news and pray for his family during such a sad time.

Gerry was the only person medicine that I try to emulate in every patient interaction. I try to emulate him in my personal life as well. He was a powerful light in this world, a light to his colleagues, a light to his patients and a light to his family. He was unwaveringly concerned with right and wrong and truth and love. There is no doubt that if people had only a fraction of the ethics that Gerry had, that our world would be thriving. Katie and the girls and I pass along our deepest condolences to Carrie and Tara and Grace, Luke and John. We love you and are thankful for your generosity and warmth during our time together. May Gerry Rest In Peace. I love you!

Although we had not seen each other for a while due to the Pandemic, I considered Gerry a good friend and colleague who always challenged me to do better. I looked forward to seeing him at annual meetings and especially planning to attend a baseball game while at those meetings. It was always the best part of the meeting. He will be dearly missed. Peace and love to his family and friends.

I am very sorry to read this sad news and also wish sincere condolences to his family. Dr. Malanga was my first mentor in PM&R. He was introduced to me by my mother who had high praise for his work ethic and bedside manner she being from the “old school” of physiatry. It quickly became apparent to me while sitting in his office doing research for Dr. Nadler and himself that Dr. Malanga was just a cool person. He also made PM&R so cool. I realized he was a contemporary pioneer in our field and I will always feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to learn from him early in my medical school training. There was a collegiality and academic drive behind his clinical and academic practice. I saw it blossom as I advanced my career and will always feel a responsibility to carry on the demeanor he brought to his patients, staff, and with whom anyone I saw him encounter in both workplace and personal settings. I honestly try to do this with every patient I see on a daily basis. I thank Dr. Malanga for all the wisdom and guidance he provided me and will never forget his mentorship. Ariz R. Mehta, M.D.
