Buddy was an unforgettable part of my life growing up. New Year's Eves at the Sarles house, swimming in the backyard pool, and riding on the back of his motorcycle up to Lake Hopatcong on a summer night. Both he and Helen are held in my heart and my memories.

I grew up in Madison and met Buddy when I was a little girl. He was always so thoughtful and kind and seemed to just watch over me. He took me flying and took me for both my drivers and motorcycle license. Funny story cause Buddy yelled at the inspector who was going to fail me for starting to put my foot down during the motorcycle test. It was raining that day and Buddy said “no one would be dumb enough to do figure eights in the rain on an oil slicked surface…you better not fail her!” The test was at the armory, on the cement, with lots of oil from all the trucks, but thanks to Buddy, I passed.
I became a police dispatcher for Hanover Twp, and Buddy would call just to say “hi” and shoot the breeze when we were both working the midnight shift. That’s the kind of person he was.
I could go on and on, but wanted to share a couple stories of just how caring Buddy was.
My thoughts and prayers are with both Lenore and Chris during this time of sorrow. May you know just how much Buddy touched everyone’s lives and how much he will be missed.
Forever in our hearts,
Margo (Toscano) Mattinson

My wife Marcia and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Carmen. Carmen and I were roomates at the FBI Academy 40 years ago. Carmen was a very caring person. He loved his family. We stayed in touch after the Academy and had a great friendship. We wish to extend to the Granato family our deepest sympathy. Retired Police Chief David Erskine, Stonington Connecticut. God bless

Ode to a Close Friend,
I came on the job in February 1970 as a snot nosed kid just out of the service; and, after doing a stint undercover was given the opportunity to work with Carmen (CG), John Forte, Frankie Sena, Gerry Sales and Lt. Vince Carey...we were known as the Renegades by our peers These were a group of men who were very strong willed and they were all good mentors for a young troop like me.
I was a bit in awe of CG. One evening after a swing shift we went to Cutter's in Morristown. We sat at the bar. Santos may have been the bar keep that night. I ordered a beer and he ordered MILK! I was impressed that a guy, who was clearly a person that one might "step aside for", was comfortable enough in himself to order milk...at Cutters. He didn't have a political bone in his body and used to say "When you're right you're right", regardless of the outcome. He had a distinctive sense and understanding of justice. We worked together off and on through the years keeping our confidences through our growing friendship. He was committed to his family and his job. We are better off as a society for his efforts and his work.
There are simply too many stories in this particular relationship and decorum suggests that they ought to rest in peace along with my friend CG. I'll catch up with you down the road with a couple of containers.

I knew Buddy from Joes central lunch. I used to ask him about his private investigation business and he would share his stories. He was a great guy and I just wanted to pass along my condolences and prayers to you all.

Buddy was the first police officer I met when I moved to Madison from Florida. He pulled me over for a right on Red at Waverly and Main. Gave me a warning, and said, “we don’t do that here”. The second time, still another warning. However that time, told me, if it happens again, you WILL get a ticket! It never did happen again! We became friends.
When my Son, Ron Fernandez passed away, he sat at Burroughs for several hours. Always mindful and would ask if I needed anything. He always seemed to keep an eye out and was kind and thoughtful to both of us, for which I will always remember. My thoughts and prayers will be with him always.
With fond and grateful memories.
